Sir: I fully support Mr.Zafar Iqbal’s view, expressed in his letter on July 15, regarding the imposition of a surcharge/levy on products and services to raise funds for the construction of dams. The donations and contributions by philanthropists alone will not be enough to get this project underway and more contribution is required from the rest of the citizens in the country. Back in the seventies I remember a levy had been imposed for the East Pakistan Flood Relief Fund, which turned out to be quite beneficial for all parties involved. There is no doubt that we, as a nation, stand united in times of crises, and the conservation of water will soon become the next big issue to face our nation
If we do not act now, we may not have enough water left to meet the needs of the agricultural sector or even to drink. While the nation should be thankful to Chief Justice Saqib Nisar for his initiative to establish a fund to raise donations for the building of dams, the long pending issue of the Kalabagh dam should also be sorted out. However, this will now be the responsibility of the next elected government and I wish them good luck in their endeavours.
