Eight killed, 21 injured in Lahore blast

LAHORE: Eight people were killed and 21 others were injured when a powerful blast occurred in an under-construction building in Lahore’s busy Defence Y block area on Thursday morning.

Emergency was imposed in General Hospital Lahore to deal with the situation. Four cars and 12 motorcycles were damaged by the blast. According to police, eight kilogrammes of explosive material were used in the bomb blast.

Initial reports stated that the blast occurred as a result of a generator’s explosion. Even the government of Punjab tweeted that the blast had been caused as a result of a generator explosion. Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah indicated that explosion at a Lahore plaza may have been chemical in nature.

Security officers launched a clearance search operation at McDonald’s in Gulberg area of Lahore after receiving information about a bomb threat in Main Boulevard. The officers evacuated McDonald’s and adjoining buildings and launched a search operation. However, no explosives were recovered from the restaurant.
