IHC dismisses Imran’s plea for larger bench

Author: Staff Report

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) Friday dismissed a civil miscellaneous application filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan seeking formation of a larger bench in a plea challenging disqualification reference against him.

IHC Chief Justice Anwar Khan Kasi announced the verdict, which was reserved earlier. The bench remarked that there was no need to establish a larger bench in the case.

Counsel for petitioner Baber Awan had argued that a larger bench should be formed regarding the constitutional matter.

On the other hand, Deputy Attorney General Fasiur Rehman had suggested the bench not to constitute a larger bench. He had said that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) wanted to decide the reference and it should be allowed to proceed in this regard.

He had argued that delaying tactics were being used by the petitioner to avoid the upcoming decision of the ECP.

It is pertinent to mention here that in the main petition Khan had taken the plea that the reference filed against him had become time barred, as it was pending before the ECP for more than 90 days.
