Street crime on the rise

Author: Daily Times

Sir, Street crime is a loose term for criminal offences taking place in public places. Nowadays street crimes are commonplace in Pakistan. Usually they occur on busy business areas of the city or on the highways. Instances of such crime include pick pocketing, mobile snatching, wallet snatching, cars and auto snatching, purse snatching and even target killing.

Street crimes have an adverse effect our neighbourhoods and societies, and gives rise to terror amongst the masses. Nowadays, every individual has their own story of how their mobile and/or wallet were snatched. However, the police rarely ever take any action against these deplorable thieves and these incidents have truly become a menace for our society today. It sometimes feels like nobody’s life and property are safe anymore.

Major causes behind this rising rate of street crime are unemployment, illiteracy, poverty, as well as other factors like lawlessness, fundamentalism, and the double standards that prevail in our society. The Government should take serious steps to control these crimes, and they can start by trying to solve the unemployment problem, provide education to the poor, and by directing police and other security forces in the country to be more alert about safeguarding the life of every citizen in Pakistan.
