ISLAMABAD: President Mamnoon Hussain on Monday called for measures to improve the safety of old buildings and congested areas.

He was addressing the launching ceremony of the Building Control Code by the National Disaster Management Authority.

The president pointed out that the new code would be applicable to new buildings but there are more risks of fires and incidents in old and dilapidated buildings as well as areas of high population density which have hanging electricity wires and other cables out in the open.

Mamnoon expressed satisfaction that the new building codes have been prepared keeping in view the local conditions emphasising that this would ensure their success.

He hoped that the process of further improving these codes would continue.
