LAHORE: The Lahore College for Women University (LCWU) Monday paid tribute to revolutionary poet Faiz Ahmad Faiz.

In this connection, the LCWU’s Urdu Literary Society organised an event in which Vice Chancellor Dr Rukhsana Kausar, Urdu Department Chairperson Humera Irshad, Students Affairs director and a large number of students participated. Students also sung verses from Faiz’s poetry.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Rukhsana Kausar said that Faiz Ahmed Faiz was a prominent name amongst Urdu poets, who promoted peace and harmony and believed that writers from the subcontinent must promote this cause.

“Faiz, whose work is considered as the backbone of development of Pakistan’s literature, arts and poetry, was one of the most beloved poets in the country,” she said, adding that Faiz Ahmed Faiz was an icon of peace. People like Faiz and Picasso lit the world with their beliefs in peace and harmony.

In her address, Urdu Department Chairperson Humera Irshad said, “We can acknowledge, but not truly understand, the sufferings of Faiz Ahmed Faiz, as personified in his poetry. His era marked the era of sensibility.”

Urdu Literary Society In-charge Dr Azra said that prior to the creation of Pakistan and later, too, Faiz called out for Indo-Pak harmony.

Student Affairs Director Bushra Nadeem said that Faiz had also written poetry in Punjabi language. She added that Faiz’s literary work was posthumously publicly honoured when the government of Pakistan conferred on him the nation’s highest civil award, Nishan-e-Imtiaz, in 1990.
