CEO Netflix predicts mobile operators will soon offer unlimited video streaming

BARCELONA: Founder of Netflix, Reed Hastings predicted that soon mobile carriers will offer data plans that will give users the facility of unlimited video streaming to meet the demand for watching TV series and movies on their personal mobile devices.

At Mobile World Congress 2017 held in Barcelona, he said, “Ten to twenty years from now all the videos you view will be through the Internet.”

“I think screens today are really stunning, you can see all the depth right in front of you. The beautiful thing is you can watch it on the move,” he added.

While the trend of watching videos on mobile devices via Netflix and other streaming sites is growing, data caps imposed on plans by mobile operators act as a barrier to users wanting to watch a video on the go.

Mobile carriers usually offer unlimited data but they are usually very expensive.

Hastings said he believed that the new system will be created by mobile carriers, where video data will be unlimited.

“What we are going to see I think are a number of companies pioneering new ways of offering services to the consumers where it is unlimited video data but it is limited to say one megabit speed,” he said.

The Netflix founder added, “So it is a slower speed but you get unlimited data on that and that turns out to be very efficient on network so an operator can offer unlimited viewing.”

Netflix offers TV streaming to its users and currently it  has around 94 million subscribers in and outside United States, which is expected to increase as it adds more customers.
