Waqar Zaka in Aleppo

Author: Daily Times

Sir: This is in reference to Ms Urooj Shahid’s text ‘Waqar Zaka in Alepp’ published in Daily Times on February 02, 2017. I appreciate Mr Zaka taking time off of his stunts to pay a visit to Aleppo. I think as citizens it is our duty to point to a case where an individual has come out of his/her hole to do something worth mentioning like Mr Zaka here did.

Ms Shahid is right that all other so-called celebrities are busy in doing their usual crap while this gentleman has finally paid attention to the oppressed ones. It is truly exemplary for the community he belongs to but aren’t we a little over-emphasising? I mean it is good to appreciate someone who has done such a humane thing for his/her fellow humans but why do we forget about others doing the same?

Do we attribute such a cold-shoulder to them because they aren’t a celebrity? Why doesn’t a commoner gets an uneducated lady to write a letter or two to the editor(s) of a national or international daily(ies)? Isn’t his/her effort(s) worth mentioning? Why did Ms. Shahid and others in Karachi forget about so soon the founder of the FixIt movement Mr Jahangeer Khan and aren’t following what he is currently up-to? Why isn’t he getting the applause anymore? In the end, I will say only; when will we, as a nation, stop discriminating people based on their social-status, their media-splendour and their public-pomposity? Hope Ms Shahid in particular and Pakistanis in general have an answer.

AWAIS MUSHTAQ
