PTI seeks Punjab governor’s dismissal

Author: Staff Report

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Babar Awan on Friday sent a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), demanding the dismissal of Punjab governor Rafique Rajwana.

The letter noted that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) was mandated to hold independent, neutral and transparent elections under the constitution. It said that the Punjab governor had strong ties with the leadership of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) as his son was contesting the election on the party’s ticket from PP-214. “His links with the party are causing instability in the election scenario,” the letter read.

Awan requested the CEC to take notice of the situation on an emergency basis.

Earlier, the PTI had asked the election watchdog to extend the polling time for the general election to be held on July 25. In a letter written to the ECP, PTI spokesman Fawad Chaudhry demanded the commission to extend the polling hours from 5pm to 8pm in the upcoming elections. On Friday, the commission extended polling time by an hour to 6pm.
