Gender discrimination

Author: Daily Times

Sir, I want to draw your attention towards the biasness prevalent against the females in our society. The majority of people still discriminate based on the gender of a person, even though many would have us believe that this a problem of the past. We assume that everything is perfect and that finally women are being given the same opportunities as the men in our country, but certain sectors of our society are still obsessed with keeping the females in their ‘place’, so as to maintain the status quo between men and women in Pakistan.

One small but prevalent example can be seen in the number of female students in the country. If a family can afford education for only a few members, then they will automatically prefer that to be the son or the man of the house, while the women are kept at home in order to learn the important skills that they might need in their future married life, like cooking, cleaning and sewing etc. There is also an assumption that many Pakistanis have that women are inherently inferior to men, and this perception needs to change.

With the help of this newspaper I want to spread awareness amongst people that men and women are born equal, and should be provided the same opportunities, both in their personal and professional lives. They both have the capability to raise families, get an education and work. All that needs to change is the way we view each gender and learn to be unbiased in the future. Thank you.
