Sir: Less than a month remains until the general elections are upon us, and all the major political parties are running their campaigns with full vigor. Possible outcomes of the elections and various campaign promises are discussed on TV talkshows everyday. Every morning when I read the newspaper, some politician seems to have made a bigger promise or a scandalous accusation regarding his political opponents.
These are the third elections being held in Pakistan consecutively. This is a new record for our democracy, but sadly our politicians still haven’t matured. Most politicians remain engaged in mudslinging against their opponents rather than talking about anything constructive. A new narrative seems to have formed in which a person is either a die-hard patriot ready to lay down his or her life for the country, or a thieving enemy of the state. As such, it seems like no milestone will be achieved post-elections, considering how uncouth our political class has turned out to be.
