ISLAMABAD:The Supreme Court on Wednesday directed the federal government to issue within two days the notification of Muhammad Saleem Baig’s appointment as the chairman of the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA).

Attorney General for Pakistan Khalid Jawed informed a three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar that the search committee had finalised the name of Saleem Baig for the post. Absar Alam, who was appointed Pemra chairman on December 1, 2015, had stepped down from his post on December 17, 2017, shortly after the Lahore High Court declared his appointment illegal.

O April 16, 2018, the federal government constituted a search committee, which also included representatives of the media, for the appointment of the Pemra chairman.

The committee comprised Planning Commission deputy chairman Sartaj Aziz, Pakistan Broadcasters Association chairman Mian Amir Mehmood, Ministry of Information secretary Ahmed Nawaz Sukhera, the joint secretary of the Establishment Division, as well as Hameed Haroon and Arif Nizami (as media reps).
