SALU initiates tree plantation drive, 1,400 trees to be planted on August 14

KHAIRPUR: The Shah Abdul Latif University (SALU) Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Parveen Shah on Tuesday held a consultative meeting that concluded to initiate a tree plantation drive at campus sites having congenial atmosphere.

Reportedly, the SALU pro-vice chancellor, registrar, Habib Bank Limited (HBL) representative and other officials were also present in the meeting.

The meeting observed that on August 14, 2018, the university would plant around 1400 indigenous plants to pursue a ‘Green Campus Vision’.

Furthermore, the saplings would be supplied by HBL authorities while a Beautification and Plantation Section has been organised that would take care of the planted saplings.

The second phase of tree plantation drive would involve other faculties and departments of the university. The eco-friendly environment of SALU already hosts hundreds of plants, and the proposed tree plantation drive aims to reduce environmental pollution in the harsh weather of Sindh.

Police detain five notorious criminals in raid, seize weapons

Acting on a tip-off, the Khairpur police officers, along with rangers, on Tuesday conducted a targeted raid on a hideout and detained five notorious criminals from Gul Muhammad Jamro village of Kot Diji sub-district in Khairpur district of Sindh province.

Reportedly, the officers arrested Sajjad aka Saju Jamro, Sabit Ali aka Sabito, Hanif Jamro, Shahzado Jamro, Kifayat Ullah Jamro and Saqib Kalhoro, and recovered a large quantity of weapons and ammunitions from their possession.

Moreover, 1.8 kilos of Hashish, a motorcycle without number plate and mobiles were also seized.

The officers revealed that the arrested criminals were affiliated with Pakistan Muslim League-Functional (PML-F), and committed many crimes during political rivalries.

GDA would collapse, if aliens withdraw their support: Manzoor Wassan

The Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) candidate Manzoor Wassan for provincial assembly seat PS-27 constituency of Kot Diji on Tuesday denounced his political rival party Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA) while talking to the media in Sukkur.

“GDA would certainly collapse, if aliens withdraw their support for the party,” he remarked while criticising GDA for awarding party tickets to the disgruntled former members of PPP for contesting elections in the upcoming general election-2018.

Regarding election rigging, he asserted that it would not be possible.

Khairpur ADC reviews security arrangements for 880 polling stations

The additional deputy commissioner (ADC) Riaz Hussain Wasan on Tuesday held a high level meeting with police officers and administrative officials to analyse security measures for the upcoming general election-2018.

Reportedly, the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Fida Hussain Mastoi, Pak Army Major Tauheed, Rangers officer Major Azhar, the district election commissioner Niaz Ahmed, the city assistant superintendent of police (ASP) Rai Mazhar Iqbal, assistant commissioners, sub-district Mukhtiarkars, building works officials, municipal committees and other influential government officers were present in the meeting.

While addressing the meeting, ADC Wasan motivated all the officers and officials of concerned departments to play an active and sincere role, and arrange security measures for conducting peaceful, fair and transparent general election. “Pak Army’s deployment during the polls would help and assist to maintain law and order in the region,” he remarked.

Meanwhile, Major Tauheed said that after inspection of eight sub-districts, base camps would be established there while military personnel would be deployed at all polling stations. “Close circuit television (CCTVs) cameras would be installed at sensitive polling stations for monitoring,” he added.

Furthermore, SSP Fida revealed that the department has formulated a mechanism to establish 81 platoons, and 180 officers would pick and drop district returning officers (DROs), assistant returning officers (AROs) and other polling staff from their respective polling stations.

“Under the plan, police pickets would be set up at all important entry and exit points for inspecting and monitoring vehicles,” he added.

Moreover, Niaz Ahmed asserted that following the directives of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), staff training process would be completed by July 15, and 880 polling stations would be established in the district for voting.
