Imran Khan’s electables

Author: Daily Times

Sir: Imran Khan began his political career with promises that he would change politics in Pakistan by bringing honest, hardworking people into Parliament. He had vowed that he would never collude with corrupt, professional politicians or extra-judicial forces.

Things have changed now. Because many of his loyal party workers are disgruntled that party tickets have been awarded to professional political turn-coats, they have been protesting outside his Bani Gala residence. When this protest continued for days, Imran Khan finally came out to address them, telling them that he had to award tickets to ‘electables’ because that was the only way to ensure the party would win the upcoming general elections.

It now seems Khan has chosen not to deliver on his promises so he could have a better chance of reaching the Prime Minister’s chair. His idealism has transformed into ruthless realpolitik, and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s ranks are filled to the brim with the very crooked politicians he had vowed to chase out of the country.

As such, all PTI supporters must ask themselves what the point of PTI’s ‘change’ was. Khan is simply delivering old wine in new bottles. Should the PTI win the upcoming general elections, perhaps the only way to avoid disappointment in the long run will be to keep our optimism in check.
