Dengue is not just a medical problem, it’s a social issue: LGH professor

Post Graduate Medical Institute Principal and Lahore General Hospital (LGH) Professor Agha Shabir Ali has said that more than a medical problem, dengue fever is a social issue which can be countered by combined efforts of all segments of the society who should put in their efforts to promote cleanliness, hygiene and sanitations in addition to sanitising masses about the importance of preventive measures against dengue.
“Especially dengue workers and professionals associated with medical sector should play their role while leading from the front to eradicate this menace from our country,” Professor Agha Shabir Ali said, while presiding a meeting held in connection with reviewing the arrangements to control dengue on Sunday. The meeting was attended by LGH Medical Superintendent Dr Mahmood Salahuddin, Nursing Superintendent Razia Bano and senior doctors of different departments.
The principal stressed upon the participants to act upon SOPs set by Punjab government regarding dengue in letter and spirit.
“Concerned administrative doctors should ensure availability of anti dengue medicines in sufficient quantity and fitness of medical equipments,” he said, adding that hospital administration must take all necessary measures before monsoon looking into matters of building roofs, drainage and sewerage.
Agha Shabir Ali said that risk of dengue larva growth increases during rainy season therefore in-door and out-door surveillance of wards, parking place, waiting rooms, latrines, low lying in roads and other public places must be ensured.
He said that dengue training has already been imparted to all the doctors, nurses and paramedics however in order to keep them up dated, symposiums, seminars and training workshops should continue in the hospital. Dengue counters established in the hospitals will have to be alert keeping in view the upcoming dengue season.
