KMC makes arrangements for cleaning the city’s clogged drains

Mayor Karachi Wasim Akhtar said that the KMC had given final shape to the arrangements for cleaning of 36 major drains on the directives of the Supreme Court of Pakistan (SCP) and the Water Commission (WC).

He informed that the work which started before Eid on the cleaning of four major drains including Orangi Nala, Gujjar Nala, Manzoor Colony Nala and Nehr-e-Khyam had also been reinitiated on Tuesday after the availability of labor and machinery.

The Mayor explained that the work was bring restarted so results could be obtained within the 30 day time limit set up by the Supreme Court and drainage of storm water could be managed properly.

He said this while presiding over a meeting on the cleaning of storm water drains which was attended by the Metropolitan Commissioner Dr. Syed Saif-ur-Rehman, Senior Director Coordination Masood Alam and other officers.

Mayor Karachi said that storm water drains had been converted into sewerage drains. He added that 60 percent of garbage was dropped in these drains and this caused the drains to choke.

He said that the Government of Sindh had provided the necessary amount and, on the directives of the Supreme Court, 36 tenders for cleaning of drains were processed out of which work on 29 of tenders had been started right away.

The mayor said that the Government of Sindh had been sent a letter for release of further Rs720million.

He said the Government of Sindh had been recently directed by the water commission for provision of financial aid to all districts of Karachi.

Mayor Karachi also appealed to citizens of Karachi to cooperate with the administration in the cleaning of drains.
