Sir: Donald Trump seems quite confident after the recent summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. He is so confident that he has already Tweeted that “the North Korean nuclear threat is over”.
This is despite the fact that all Trump has managed to secure is the end of North Korea’s war games with South Korea. Regardless, it is doubtful that North Korea’s nuclear arms are of any real danger to anyone. The truth is that countries like Russia, China and South Korea acquired nuclear arms because of fear of US military recklessness. After all, the US was the first country to acquire nuclear weapons, and the first country to use them.
If the US wants to discourage other countries from acquiring nuclear weapons, it must first set an example and make sure other countries don’t need nuclear weapons to secure themselves against US aggression. Sadly, that is unlikely to happen anytime soon.
