14 modern horror classics you cannot miss

Author: Haider Rifaat

Not everyone can handle the horror genre. It takes a lot of courage to sit through two hours of endless thrills. That said, I have come up with a list of my favorite modern horror flicks that you should watch over the weekend, with family or alone, if you dare.

14. Carrie (Remake)

Rating: 8/10

Review: I watched Carrie with great anticipation and it turned out to be a great remake of the 1976 original film. Although Chloe Grace Moretz led the pack, Julianne Moore stole the show with her role as Carrie White’s mother. Do not miss this one! It is worth watching.

13. The Hills Have Eyes (Remake)

Rating: 8/10

Review: Although it turned out to be a lot more gruesome than I had expected, The Hills Have Eyes delivered enough chills to land this spot. The plot revolves around a group of cannibalistic hillbillies who prey on a family.

12. The Grudge

Rating: 10/10

Review: In terms of horror, The Grudge is a winner! It has revolutionized the modern horror genre given its creative plot and visual aesthetics. To top it off, Sarah Michlle Gellar gave an incredible performance as Karen Davis.

11. Scream Franchise

Rating: 9/10

Review: Wes Craven did a fine job directing all five Scream films. My favorite picks from the series are Scream and its sequel Scream 2. There is always something mysterious about the slasher genre, or maybe it is just Ghostface!

10. P2

Rating: 9/10

Review: P2 is probably one of the best modern horror films out there. Despite a meager budget, the team managed to outperform its contemporaries in view of direction, writing and acting. Horror fanatics should definitely have P2 on their bucket list.

9. Vacancy

Rating: 8/10

Review: What can I say about Vacancy except that it was truly the best in terms of conception, acting and visuals. Kate Beckinsale deserves particular praise for her performance as one of the victims.

8. I Know What You Did Last Summer

Rating: 9/10

Review: IKWYDLS is a great teen-horror film. The unexpected climax scenes will keep you on the edge of your seats! Once again, my all-time favorite actress, Sarah Michelle Gellar impressed me with her amazing scream queen acting. She knows how to yelp with soul! There is also a potential reboot in development.

7. When A Stranger Calls (Remake)

Rating: 8/10

Review: One has to be patient with this film. It progresses steadily but it is definitely worth the wait. Believe it when I say it, When a Stranger Calls will not disappoint you!

6. Orphan

Rating: 9/10

Review: Isabelle Fuhrman’s acting was flawless in Orphan. It amazes me how a young girl can act so brilliantly. The movie is unbelievably thrilling and the plot is too good to be true.

5. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (Remake)

Rating: 10/10

Review: This film made me jump several times. It was engrossing in all aspects; acting, direction, visuals and storyline. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is one of the best horror films to date.

4. Black Christmas (Remake)

Rating: 10/10

Review: Another Christmas-horror movie! I read its plot on IMDB and it turned out to be a great horror flick. The background music and comforting ambience were two standout features of Black Christmas.

3. House of Wax (Remake)

Rating: 10/10

Review: Jaune-Collet Serra did a fine job making this film. What a movie it turned out to be! It is easily one of my favorites. House of Wax is a perfect example of what a modern horror film should look like.

Note: They sure wasted a lot of wax though. Oh well, it was all for our entertainment. Wink.

2. Wrong Turn

Rating: 10/10

Review: I have no words to describe this film (in a good way of course!) The title pretty much summarizes the plot. There is nothing better than having Eliza Dushku play the lead in a thriller. She is an amazing actress! Without a doubt, Wrong Turn is worthy of this spot.

1. 30 Days of Night

Rating: 10/10

Review: Shot in Barrow, Alaska, 30 Days of Night is the best horror film I have ever come across in the last decade. It re-introduced bloodthirsty vampires in the classiest fashion.
