Canada-based cleric Qadri returns as elections approach

LAHORE: As elections approach, the Canada-based chairman of the Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT), Dr. Tahir-ul-Qadri, has returned to the country.

Speaking to the media on his arrival at the Lahore airport, Qadri said, “The prisons are waiting for Nawaz Sharif. He will reach his logical conclusion very soon.”

He added, “He (Nawaz Sharif) started making political speeches in response to questions asked by the accountability court.”

Qadri continued that the issues of the country would not be resolved with the arrest of Sharif family members. “We also have to fight for justice for Model Town victims,” he said.

Commenting on Nawaz Sharif’s slogan seeking respect for the vote, he asked why was the former prime minister raising the demand only after he was disqualified by the Supreme Court.

He said it was time that the accountability net was cast wide and former Punjab chief minister Shehbaz Sharif was also included in it.

“A corrupt system was put in place for looting the country. Shahbaz Sharif and his accomplices should be held accountable,” Qadri said. Qadri, expressing his view on the changes made on the nomination forms, said that it was a clear sign of the dishonesty of parliamentarians. “This will be a real test of the institutions,” he said.
