Sir: Pakistan’s social backwardness can be attributed to a number of factors. But, one important and often ignore reason that should be given due consideration is the lack of emphasis on social sciences in this country. Somehow, we have been able to develop nuclear technology, that only a handful of countries possess, but we have not been able to dedicate any time and resources to the study of society and how to improve it.
Majority of our youth prefer to become doctors and engineers, while just a few gravitate towards social sciences. Interestingly, almost half of those who fail to build their career as doctors and engineers come to join social sciences.
Development of society and creating awareness among people requires social norms, values, rights and duties. For Pakistan, it is quite necessary to promote social sciences in order to fulfil its Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
It is high time that the government formulated policies for promoting social sciences.
