KHYBER AGENCY: The lady health workers (LHWs) on Monday held a demonstration in the town of Jamrud against non-payment of their monthly salaries for the last one year.
They demanded Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) and Governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) to take notice of the matter and issue directives regarding their pending salaries. Meanwhile, scores of LHWs gathered and staged a sit-in that interrupted traffic flow at Pak-Afghan Highway.
Despite the fact that they had worked in all health campaigns under health department’s command, their salaries were halted, the protesters asserted and said “Most of us are sole breadwinners of our households and withholding our salaries starves our children”. In the Islamic month of Ramazan, many departments allocated special packages for their employees, but LHWs were deprived of their basic salaries.
They further threatened that if their backlog of salary arrears is not cleared, they would launch an indefinite agitation and the Pak-Afghan highway would be blocked accordingly.
