KHAIRPUR: The International Conference on Statistical Sciences (ICSS-2017), organized by the Department of Statistics at Shah Abdul Latif University in Khairpur in collaboration with the Islamic Countries Society of Statistical Sciences (ISOSS) and Higher Education Commission, concluded on Sunday. MNA Dr. Syeda Nafisa Shah Jillani was the chief guest while Prof. Dr. Parveen Shah, Vice Chancellor, presided over the ceremony. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Jillani said in the modern state the essential key of science is data. It determines how the population is measured and locates and shapes the resources. Dr. Jillani believes statistics is an indispensible science which provides complete data. The census is an important sector for statisticians and it is high time to collect credible data. She asserted that it wasimperative to manage the population within the available resources. In Pakistan, there is massive shift of population from rural to urban. She quoted the example of Karachi – where there is an influx of people from different parts of the country owing to poverty. Therefore, constant credible data should be gathered to eradicate the social problems confronting society today. Prof. Shah noted that the advancement of science requires peace, stability and cooperation; believing that the International Conference on Statistical Sciences shall set the example. Hosting the 15th International Conference at Shah Abdul Latif University provided a good opportunity to national scientists to learn from each other. She hoped that this conference will mark a new starting point for the development of Statistics in Pakistan. The V.C also hoped that the conference will inspire a new era of international cooperation for the global scientific community. Prof. Dr. Munir Ahmed, Patron of ISOSS believed the census is being held in Pakistan with disturbing factors. During the deliberations of the conference, 14 members of the committee of statisticians were constituted to assistthe process of the census. He asserted that the census is technical and not politically motivated and is being conducted under the umbrella of the constitution. A regular census must be conducted to collect relevant data.
