Celebrities and social media

Author: Daily Times

Sir: Today social media seems to have gone crazy over a controversial statement about slavery in America. Pop star Kanye West made a vague statement about the historical issue, and all of social media is up in arms about it. Surprisingly, many in Pakistan have also spent their whole day debating with others about Kanye’s statement and views.

I have two questions to ask. Firstly, why are a pop star’s views on political issues important? A pop star’s job is to manufacture music that will records and make money. It is not even politically charged music, and they can hardly be considered poets. So why do we give relevance to their views on political topics?

Secondly, every individual has the right to use social media as they like, but couldn’t the aforementioned Pakistanis find something better to debate? There are many issues in our own country that would benefit from attention on social media.
