LAHORE: Immigration authorities on Wednesday stopped Pakistani national Table Tennis team at Allama Iqbal International airport from travelling overseas for an international competition.

The team was commuting to Sweden via an international airline to participate in World Team Table Tennis Championships 2018 were stopped by immigration officials and Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) personnel.

The team comprised of Asim Qureshi, Ramiz Hussain, Aisha Iqbal, Fatima Khan and Mahmoodah.

According to one of the players, officials halted the members from travelling, because the team didn’t have a confirmation letter from Interior Ministry.

However, another reason surfaced from sources, that the team was stopped due to certain alliances within Table Tennis Federation of Pakistan which had played a role in barring the national team from travelling abroad.

Liebherr World Team Table Tennis Championship 2018 will be commencing on April 29 in Halmstad Arena, Sweden till May 6. The tournament will be Sweden’s largest sports event with 72 women’s teams and 72 men’s teams participating from 100 different countries.
