Cake actor, Adnan Malik in his most recent interview with BBC Asian Network said, “The entertainment industry needs to help redefine masculinity in the country, and create a positive image of Pakistani men around the world”.
He explained that there is a need to reinvent the perception of masculinity in Pakistani cinema and TV, as people have a tendency to identify themselves with the characters. He further explained that the diversification in male characters will help them respect women more.
“People now base their sense of selves and identities based on the TV shows they watch or what they see on the internet or movies. So you need to have these kinds of role models”, said Malik.
Sadkay Tumharay actor emphasized that male characters must be depicted with an impartial approach that will most likely help the viewers to reflect on their behavior, that can bring an optimistic and constructive change in the society.
Malik also said that the male characters shown on screen should be strong enough, who are okay when a woman says no to them, and men who care for and respect their mothers and sisters.
“I will play characters that I feel morally aligned to. If I am doing something that is misogynistic, I will definitely have second thoughts,” Malik expressed.
Topics like demoralized women and extra-marital relationships lead the prime-time drama serials. Rape is repeatedly romanticized in the drama production. Rather than conveying dark and depressing messages, the platform can be used to transmit a vital change in our society, said the actor.
