ISLAMABAD: State Minister for Information Marriyum Aurangzeb was on Monday removed from the PEMRA chairman selection committee on orders of the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Saqib Nisar.
A Supreme Court (SC) three-judge bench headed by Justice Nisar conducted hearing of the media commission case. Additional Attorney General Rana Waqar presented the names of the 7-member committee assigned the task to select the PEMRA chairman.
Upon hearing the names, Justice Nisar ordered removal of Marriyum Aurangzeb from the committee and directed the AG to appoint secretary information as a replacement. In his remarks, Justice Nisar said “Marriyum Aurangzeb is too busy recording statements before the media, and would not have time to look into this matter.”
The CJP also inquired whether the authority has “done anything” to ammend the laws. Justice Sheikh Azmat questioned if there was a Section under the PEMRA code of conduct which looked into the matter of fake news since it has became a “huge problem”.
To this end, Rana Waqar said that “it is extremely essential to counter fake news.”
