Lawyers oppose revival of military courts

Author: Staff Report

KARACHI: The city’s legal fraternity has opposed the revival of military courts for two more years to try terror suspects. “Military courts ran parallel to the judicial system and were contrary to the fundamental rights, said the representatives of Sindh Bar Council, Sindh High Court Bar Association (SHCBA), Karachi and Malir Bar Association at a joint presser held at the premises of the high court. Kashif Paracha, SHCBA’s secretary general, said military court trials negated the very principle of fair trial and independent judiciary. The government relied on military courts for speedy trial of suspected terrorists, but it failed to take steps to improve the judicial system, he lamented. The lawyers demanded that if military courts were inevitable then the government should legislate to involve sessions judge to conduct open trials along with military officers to upheld the principle of justice. Karachi Bar Association president Naeem Qureshi, SBC’s Khalid Marwat and others also spoke on the occasion.
