LAHORE: The Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Saqib Nisar on Saturday summoned Railways Minister Saad Rafique over allegations of embezzlement in the Pakistan Railways.

While hearing the case regarding alleged corruption in Pakistan Railways, Justice Nisar summoned Saad Rafique, while he also ordered to present a detailed report regarding corruption and embezzlement in the ministry.

CJP also inquired about the total losses faced by the ministry, to which a representative of Pak railways responded “there are losses worth Rs 60 billion.”

To this end, CJP ordered senior officials of the ministry to present the reasons for the losses before the court in the next hearing.

He added that “Indian’s Railways head Lalu Prasad was an illiterate and he still managed a profitable ministry. Here, the profitability of the ministry is explained in the rallies, while there is no practical proof.”

Responding to CJP’s remarks, Saad Rafique took to Twitter earlier today and stressed that he has never made such claims.

“We have never claimed that the ministry is earning profits. The situation is better in comparison to previous times. Pak railways used to earn Rs 15 billion, but now it earns Rs 50 billion.”

He added that the entire ministry has worked day and night to transform a ‘corrupt’ Pak railways into a workable and efficient system.
