‘Newcastle’ claims death of 40 peacocks

HYDERABAD: Deadly viral disease Newcastle commonly known as ‘ranikhet’ killed at least 40 peacocks in Diplo Thar during last two days. High humidity has further intensified the situation.

However, the reason behind the outbreak of the disease remains ‘mysterious’.

Some locals shared the information that the infected peacocks had swollen eyes and excessive watering mouths. Later, they fell down unconsciously and die.

Local villagers considered rise of temperatures and improper diet possible causes of death of peacocks. They appealed to the livestock department for eradication of Newcastle to preserve the generation of peacocks.
