ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is committed to peace and stability in the region, particularly in Afghanistan, through a national approach, said Chief of Army Staff Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa on Monday.
“But, we also expects other players in the region to play an equally positive part in this regard,” Gen Bajwa told US Department of State’s Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary Alice Wells during a meeting at the GHQ.
“Regional security environment and matters of mutual interest were discussed in the meeting,” said the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) in a statement.
Ambassador Wells said that US is committed to lasting peace and supports all efforts towards that end. “Both [leaders] agreed that bilateral convergences should be leveraged to gain positive momentum rather than remaining hostage to perceptions,” the statement added.
Wells arrived in Islamabad last week to discuss matters pertaining to terrorism and bilateral relations. This is her second visit to Pakistan this year which aims at continuing the Pak-US dialogue to strengthen bilateral relations and promote peace and security in the region. During her stay, she has held meetings with Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua and National Security Adviser Lt Gen (r) Nasser Khan Janjua.
