ASPEN: American Mikaela Shiffrin was edged out in the final run Saturday, missing her 12th World Cup victory of the season when Slovakia’s Petra Vlhova captured the World Cup Final slalom race. Shiffrin, who had already clinched the World Cup overall and slalom season points crowns, was .07 of a second off the pace in third after the opening run at the Rocky Mountain piste just down the road from her home in Vail. Shiffrin was on lead pace from the start and completed her second run for a total time of 1:32.24 and Sweden’s Frida Hansdotter, .01 ahead of Shiffrin’s early pace on the next and penultimate run, faded at the end to finish in 1:32.35 and grab third. That left Vlhova, who was off winning pace through the first two interval times but surged at the bottom of the course to swipe the victory in 1:32.00. Shiffrin can still match Lindsey Vonn’s US record of 12 World Cup race victories in a single season by taking season-ending giant slalom, which would also give her hope of overtaking France’s Tessa Worley for the Cup giant slalom crown. Shiffrin has the most wins of any man or woman in World Cup races this season with seven slalom triumphs, three more in giant slaloms plus a super combined victory.
