ISLAMABAD: State Minister Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb on Saturday lashed out at Panama JIT head Wajid Zia for failing to defend his own statements.
She was referring to Wajid Zia’s earlier statements in the accountability court hearing corruption references against Nawaz and family. Zia had said that NAB did not find any documents that proved Nawaz Sharif owned the Avenfield properties.
“What are you afraid of? If you are afraid, you should not have been involved in any wrongdoings. You shouldn’t have collected fake evidence, which you cannot defend today,” said Marriyum while talking to the media.
Marriyum also added that Zia’s statements support the position of Sharif family. On the other hand, former PM Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz said that Zia’s statements show NAB has no solid proof of corruption or money laundering against them.
The trial against the Sharif family had commenced on September 14, 2017.
The corruption references, filed against the Sharif family are related to the Al-Azizia Steel Mills and Hill Metal Establishment, offshore companies including Flagship Investment Ltd, and Avenfield properties of London.
Nawaz Sharif and sons Hussain and Hasan are indicted in all three references whereas his daughter Maryam and her husband Captain (retd) Safdar are accused in the Avenfield reference only.
The two brothers, based abroad were declared proclaimed offenders by the court as they have never appeared before the court since the cases began.
