ISLAMABAD: The accountability court on Wednesday resumed hearing of the Avenfield references against former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, daughter Maryam Nawaz and son-in-law Captain (retd) Safdar.
Nawaz’s counsel did cross-examination of Panama JIT head Wajid Zia and asked a range of questions pertaining the case.
Harris inquired whether the JIT found any documents that showed Nawaz Sharif was the beneficial owner of Avenfield, to which Wajid Zia responded in negative.
“Mossack Fonseca did not provide any documents which show that Nawaz was the beneficial owner of the Avenfield flats,” Wajid said.
He, however, stated that the JIT found out about the beneficial owner on the basis of two letters that were written in 2012 and 2017 respectively.
Khawaja Harris further questioned that ‘On whose orders from Pakistan were the letters from 2012 written?” to which Zia responded that ‘PPP had its government in 2012, and Rehman Malik was the interior minister.’
Speaking to the media outside the court, former PM Nawaz said that all allegations against the Sharif family have been ‘washed’. “Wajid Zia has washed all accusations against us today,” Nawaz added.
The former PM also said that he should have been in London to look after ailing wife, Kulsoom Nawaz, but he was not allowed to go. He, however, stressed that ‘one by one the facts are being revealed’.
On Tuesday, Wajid Zia concluded recording his statements before the accountability court pertaining the case. He had said that Nawaz’s son Hussain Nawaz was the beneficial owner of the Avenfield properties from 1993-1996 as per his own remarks before the JIT.
