KARACHI: The Sindh High Court directed the secretary of Ministry of Water & Power, chairman Nepra and K-Electric’s head to appear in the court to explain ‘excessive billing’.

A two-judge bench headed by Justice Nadeem Akhtar issued notices to federal secretary of Ministry of Water & Power, secretary law, Sindh chief secretary, secretary energy department, National Accountability Bureau (NAB) chairman, Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) director general, and head of Shanghai Electric Power to submit their comments till March 28.

The bench headed by Justice Nadeem Akhtar was hearing the petition jointly filed by civil rights campaigners and non-government organizations against the power utility for charging excessive bills.

The petitioners submitted that power supply remained quite erratic in the city, yet the power utility issued excessive bills to consumers. The regulatory body, NEPRA, had consistently failed to discharge its duties to take action against K-Electric for this illegal act.

They said the minister for water & power had asked Nepra to look into the matter and fix new tariff and reimbursing excessive charged amount to consumers but the regulatory body failed to do so.

The petitioners requested the court to form a judicial commission to probe the issue of excessive billing.
