LAHORE: Police registered a case against the arrested students of Punjab University on Wednesday, a day after a clash between two rival student groups which left at least 18 students injured.
The case was registered at Muslim Town police station against the arrested students as well as ‘unknown persons’.
The Punjab University campus remained open today but all activities scheduled for today have been cancelled. Students who came to sit for examinations were allowed to enter the campus earlier today.
Meanwhile, police personnel have been guarding the departments to prevent any unwanted incident.
Punjab Government spokesman Malik Ahmed Khan, speaking to media said, no one would be allowed to create chaos at Punjab University.
“Enough is enough, action will be taken against the bullying elements,” he vowed.
The spokesperson added that Chief Minister Punjab Shehbaz Sharif would be briefed on the elements which lead to such incidents.
A clash broke out between two student groups in Punjab University on Tuesday, prompting authorities to call in police which resorted to aerial firing and tear-gassing to control the situation.
According to reports, a student group was celebrating their cultural day outside the Faisal Auditorium, when a rival student group arrived and began chanting slogans against them, which led to an all-out brawl. The students were seen attacking each other with sticks and bricks.
The clash left at least 18 students injured, while a stall at the cultural show venue also caught fire from a tear gas shell.
Punjab Law Minister RanaSanaullah put the responsibility of the clash on IslamiJamiatTulba activists. He said that 18 out of 22 arrested students involved in brawl belonged to the IJT. The IJT, on the other hand, said their camp first came under attack by the rival group.
