KARACHI: Former Minister for Religious Affairs Hamid Saeed Kazmi on Wednesday was released from the Adiala Jail, two days after the Islamabad High Court acquitted him in Hajj-related corruption cases.

While talking to media, the former minister expressed his gratitude to Allah for his release.

“The current verdict reinstated my trust,” he said. He added that his trial continued for six years, although no one accused him before a court.

In response to a question about whether he would reconsider joining politics, the former minister said that the question was too “difficult to answer”.

The case in the Islamabad High Court was heard by Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kiyani who also issued acquittal orders for former Hajj director general Rao Shakeel and former Religious Affairs joint secretary Aftabul Islam. The IHC also declared the order of the trial court in the cases null and void.

Kazmi and others were accused of receiving kickbacks and hiring a substandard building on exorbitant rent for housing Pakistani pilgrims during Hajj.
