KARACHI: Local fisherman took part in a traditional boat race organized by the Pakistan Coast Guard (PCG) in the Southern Port city of Karachi on Thursday.

Pakistan Day is observed on March 23rd every year. On this day in 1940 the Muslim League had demanded the establishment of a separate state to protect the rights of Muslims in the then-British colony of India.

On the occasion, Director General of thePakistan Coast Guard Brigadier Ateeq-ur- Rehman said that the program’s aim was to involve the fishermen as well as the local residents of the coastal area to create a sense of patriotism among them. He believed that there is a strong-bonding between the relationship of the fishermen and the coastal guards, “the fishermen go to the deep sea for their livelihood while the guards protect them”, he explained.

The DG appreciated the work of the fishermen, stating that they are great asset to the country as they face multifaceted challenges during their journey to provide sustenance for the people. He further said that the Pakistan Coast Guard has been focusing on the issue of illegal immigrants attempting entry into the country – adding that almost 1600 illegal immigrants have been apprehended in a period of one and a half year.
