LAHORE: Like other parts of the world, Pakistan observed Earth Hour on Saturday from 8:30pm to 9:30pm, dimming or turning off the lights in bid to call attention towards climate change and the measures needed globally to fight global warming.

Lights were dimmed or turned off for an hour in all state and provincial buildings in the city, calling attention towards the hazardous changes mankind is bringing to Earth.

Pakistan passed the climate change act, reviving hopes and scepticism earlier. In other part of the world, Sydney’s Opera House and Harbour Bridge plunged into darkness to mark Earth Hour.

Millions of people from some 170 countries and territories were expected to take part in the annual bid to highlight global warming caused by the burning of coal, oil and gas to drive cars and power plants.

The event, which originated in Sydney, has grown to become a worldwide environmental campaign, celebrated across all continents.

Conservation group WWF, which organises Earth Hour, said great strides had been made in highlighting the dire state of the planet.

“We started Earth Hour in 2007 to show leaders that climate change was an issue people cared about,” coordinator Siddarth Das said.
