PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has issued driving licences to 15 transgender persons.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Traffic Yasir Khan Afridi distributed the licences among them during a ceremony held in the provincial capital.

“300 transgender persons applied for driving licence. 15 transgender persons were licensed to drive, in the first phase, whereas the rest of applicants would be treated gradually,” said the SSP.

He said transgender persons can play an important role in the progress of the country.

The government’s policies for the protection of the community are in their final stage of legislation, said Afridi, adding that the policies aim to make public transportation transgender-friendly.

He added that the traffic police would take action against those public transport providers who charge extra fare, harass or deny services to the transgender community.
