Saving lives

Author: Daily Times

Sir: I have seen in Lahore that on roads people do not bother to budge their vehicles when they hear the siren of an approaching ambulance.

The people tend to stick to their own lanes instead of giving some space to the ambulance so that it could continue its journey without facing any traffic gridlock. However, we have become so materialistic that we do not care about our surroundings; we tend to ignore the fact that we could help people by moving our vehicles to the other lane. It might be because we have forgotten the true meaning of humanity.

We are so engrossed in our routine lives that on the roads we follow the same pattern. Some people become angry when they have to give way for an ambulance. As human beings, we must show respect to other people when they need our help. As soon as we hear the siren of an ambulance or Rescue 1122 vehicle, we should switch our lane to give some space so that we could save a life by doing this.

I have seen that when one car leaves space for an ambulance to pass, it gets stuck due to the callous attitude of other road users. When people stick to their own lanes and ignore the fact that some people could be saved by their act, it seems that they are in more of a hurry than the ambulance. I suggest that there should be a separate route for ambulances and Rescue 1122 so that they could reach their destination without being stuck in the traffic.

In my opinion, the government must build discrete paths as they have erected for metro buses. And hospitals must put forward a request to government officials to build roads specifically for them. Many deaths have occurred just because rescue services could not get patients or injured persons to hospitals on time. As life is a precious gift we must value it and we must care for each other as this is what humanity is.
