Polio menace

Author: Daily Times

Sir: I wish to draw the attention of the authorities to the issue of attacks on polio teams and the general attitude people in this country have about polio vaccinations.

On Tuesday, a four member team of health workers, accompanied by assistant commissioner Sheikh Rafiq, attempted to administer to students at a school. The school administration refused. It is shocking that the administration of a school can have such backward views. This is a result of rumours spread by the Taliban that polio vaccinations are a conspiracy to sterilize Muslims.

In other incidents, polio teams have also been targeted by militants. Last month, two women polio workers were gunned down in Quetta. I request that the government take action against those who attack our brave polio workers, and fix the damage done by the Taliban through educational campaigns.
