Verdict in PTI funding case reserved till March 7

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has reserved its decision on the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) plea to not reveal details of its funding sources.

During proceedings in the hearing of a petition filed by disgruntled PTI founding member Akbar S Babar on Tuesday, Chief Election Commissioner Justice (retd) Sardar Raza Khan observed that the commission had been hearing the PTI say from day one that the ECP was not a court or a tribunal.

Anwar Mansoor, the PTI’s counsel, earlier argued that the ECP could hear the case but it could not share details of the party’s funding sources with the petitioner. The PTI counsel maintained that the auditor general could be asked to help probe the party’s funding record.

On PTI’s request, the ECP reserved its decision in the petition alleging the party of collecting funds from illegal and foreign sources. The verdict will be announced on March 7.

At the last hearing, the ECP had chided the PTI for delaying the matter. The PTI had earlier petitioned the Islamabad High Court, challenging the ECP’s jurisdiction to hear the petition.
