SHANGHAI: Chinese Super League club Shanghai Shenhua’s Hongkou Football Stadium caught fire on Tuesday, as smoke was seen rising from the 33,000 capacity arena.

Amateur footage showed firefighter’s battling against the raging fire which reportedly broke out at 8:30 am and disrupted traffic.

Nobody was hurt in the incident and firefighters managed to control the blaze successfully.

Initial reports stated that fire erupted inside the clubs indoor rock climbing facilities but authorities are conducting further investigations into the matter.

Shanghai Shenhua are managed by Gus Poyet, and they may have to play their next home game against Changchun Yatai on April 16 elsewhere if repairs cannot be completed out in time for the fixture.

The club made headlines just before the New Year when they signed Argentine striker Tevez – formerly of West Ham, Manchester United and Manchester City – for around £71.6million.

With his extraordinary £615,000-a-week salary, Tevez is by far the highest-paid footballer in the world and the two-year contract reflects the immense wealth available to Super League clubs.

Hongkou Stadium was China’s first professional football stadium when it was opened in March 1999.
