KARACHI: Former President and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) co-chairperson Asif Ali Zardari has termed former SSP Malir Rao Anwar, wanted in Naqeebullah Mehsud’s murder case, as a “brave kid”.
Rao Anwar is accused of killing young Naqeebullah Mehsud in a fake encounter.
In an interview, Zardari said that the media sensationalised the Naqeebullah’s murder. He stressed on the “need of reviewing the case” with a new angle.
He also termed the reports of Anwar’s involvement in 444 extrajudicial killings as just “mere talks”.
“At least 54 police officers took part in the operation against Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM). 53 of them killed while Rao Anwar was the only survivor,” said the former president.
Anwar is known as a close aide to Zardari. He went underground after the Supreme Court (SC) issued arrest warrants for him.
In a previous hearing of the case, the court issued contempt notice to the former SSP Malir and directed authorities to freeze all his bank accounts over his consistent failure to appear in hearings.
