Science education need of hour for economic development

HYDERABAD: Science education is the need of the hour and vital for enabling the young generation with modern science approaches for the country’s soci-economic development.

The speakers at an inaugural session of 4-day training on modern teaching skills and an Inquiry Based Science Education-IBSE, organised by Sindh Community Foundation in collaboration with the Community Development Programme-CDP-Planning and Development Board, government of Sindh with technical support of Pakistan Science Foundation at Hyderabad emphasized that training would enable female teachers with modern teaching skills to improve quality education among female students of targeted school so that they would be handling science subjects as well.

The 22 female teachers from 8 government girls’ secondary schools including GGHS Nazarpur, GGHS Dando, GGHS Campus Shaikh Bhirkiyo, GGHS T.M Khan City, GGHS Campus Bulri Shah Kareem, GGHS Dulha Jo Pir, GGHS Rajo Nizamani and GGHS Baqar Nizamani were participating.

Javed Hussain, Head of Sindh Community Foundation sharing objectives of training said that science education was in the worst situation in Sindh province due to various factors including lack of availability of science laboratories in schools, old methods of learning, lack of practical work in science subjects in secondary schools, no such conducive learning environment for science subjects etc.

He said that SCF with support of CDP was planning to establish and upgrade science laboratories in targeted schools and would conduct science fairs through conducive and modern learning environment in schools.

He claimed that this project would increase learning outcomes of 675 girl’s students in science subjects of 11 girl’s secondary schools of TM Khan District. The female students will have increased access to experimental classes by availability of science laboratories and equipment.

He said that it would improve conducive learning environment and would increase retention of girl’s students and motivate them to pursue further education. Asad Khan, Scientific Officer of Pakistan Science Foundation said that teachers have great role to improve science education through applying IBSE which was student centre approach of teaching and allow student to investigate different topics and concepts of science with their interest.

Aisha Agha of SCF, Khalid Soomoro of PSF also spoke on the occasion.
