Social media trolls

Author: Daily Times

Sir: While social media has been a source of information and has allowed many voiceless people to voice their opinions, it has also allowed an unfettered free speech to those who do not even want freedom expression in the society at the first place. Whenever there is a an attempt to utilize social media for the purpose of reforms and open debate, social media trolls hijack the whole discourse and pollute the flow of information with propaganda and fake news.

It cannot be said with surety whether these social media trolls and fake accounts are owned or sponsored by some ‘forces’, but it is absolutely clear that whose purpose do they serve by trolling the voices of democracy, reason and liberalism.

I am not saying there should be a strict policing on who is saying what but at least there should be a basic set of rules that helps us to keep our public debates and discussions decent and safe.
