MITHI: District Education Ranking Report states that more than 1000 primary and middle schools in Tharparkar districts closed due to the absence of teachers, Daily Times learnt on Friday.

The report also stated that hundreds of the schools in the desert area were in the poor conditions due to alleged indifferent attitude of government and lack of the interests on the part parents and villagers.

Partab Shivani the representative of Alif Aillaan and the local activists including Mohammad Ramzan Junejo, Suder Kothari and others addressing the press conference on Friday showed their concerns over the recent report and urged Sindh government step forward to take steps to save education in the desert area.

Quoting the report, they said that Thar was at number 121st out of the total 151 districts of the country and on number 23rd in the province.

“There are 5,148 teachers posted in 4,008 schools but according to the report, more than 1000 mostly primary and middle were lying closed down due too the absence of over 1,500 school teachers in the remote areas of Thar region,” they added.

The report further revealed that the funds under school management committees are being provided but these funds are not being properly utilized to purchase the required furniture and other material.

Shivani further said that that even in the functional schools, there was no science teacher and laboratory while students were weak in the mathematics and others showing their grave concerns revealed that literacy rate among the girls were fast decreasing due to early marriages, migration by the villagers in the wake of ongoing drought-spell, social taboos and other factors.
