Smoking on the rise

Author: Daily Times

Sir: The number of people who take up smoking in our country is on the rise. This is making our populace more susceptible to issues like heart disease, stroke and cancer. A person who smokes is at a 48 percent higher risk for heart disease and a 25 percent higher risk for stroke than a person who has never smoked.

Thousands of people die every year in our country because of smoking. Electronic and print media can play an important role in spreading awareness about this hazard, and reducing its prevalence.
