KARACHI: The internal rift in the Muttahida Quami Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) over Senate elections tickets deepens as both the fractions submitted nomination papers of their candidates to the Election Commision of Pakistan (ECP) separately.

MQM-P convener Dr Farooq Sattar was in favour of awarding Senate ticket to Kamran Tessori while the Rabita Committee was opposing this decision.

February 8, today, was the last day to submit nomination papers for the Senate elections going to be held on March 3.

Sattar’s camp

As both the fractions failed to unanimously agree on candidates for the elections, Sattar nominated Kamran Tessori and Farhan Chisti for general seats while Ahmed Chinoy and Hasan Feroz have been awarded the tickets in technocrat category.

He nominated Nighat Shamim for the women’s seat and Mangla Sharma for the minority seat.

Rabita Committee’s camp

The Rabita Committee nominated Nasreen Jalil, Ameenul Haque, Farogh Naseem, Amir Chisti, Kishwar Zehra, Matee-ur-Rehman, and Abdul Qadir Khanzada as their candidates.

Karachi Mayor Waseem Akhtar had voiced against the “individual decisions” made by the party. He endorsed the Rabita Committee’s decision against Kamran Tessori.

However, both the fractions maintained that a number of nominated candidates will be withdrawn if the matter is resolved.
