BARNALA: A giant portrait dedicated to Pakistani Nobel Laureate Malala Yousufzai has been painted on a wall in Barnala district of Indian Punjab.

Malala was painted along with five other women including singer Lata Mangeshkar, writer Amrita Prem, athlete P.T. Usha, boxer Mary Kom, and astronaut Kalpana Chawla as part of the district’s ‘Beti Bachaoo, Beti Parhao‘ (save daughters, educate daughters) campaign.

The campaign, initiated by Deputy Commissioner Ghansyham Thori under the Union ministry of Women and Child Development, aims to further raise the status of women in the region after improvements were seen during the past few years.

Artist Jasvir Mahi, himself selected the women to paint and executed his idea after getting permission from the district administration.
